Leveling up IT Recruitment: Our training sessions in review

We recently partnered with Berg Search, a boutique executive search firm specializing in tech and digital recruitment, to deliver a hands-on, practical training series for their IT recruiting team. Berg Search has built a strong reputation for understanding both the human and technical sides of hiring, and this initiative was a reflection of their commitment to staying ahead of the curve in an increasingly complex tech landscape.

Over the course of four sessions, we equipped their team with the tools, context, and confidence to better understand the roles they hire for—beyond keywords and buzzwords.

Here’s a look back at what we covered and why it matters

Session 1: Foundations of IT Recruitment

We kicked things off by building a common understanding of how the tech world works. From the structure of engineering teams to the lifecycle of a software project, we laid the groundwork for deeper conversations.

Highlights:

  • Key roles in tech: Frontend vs Backend vs DevOps vs Data
  • Agile teams and how work gets shipped
  • Developer mindsets and what they value in a job

Session 2: Programming Languages, Frameworks, and Databases

In this session, we dove into the tech stack. We didn’t expect recruiters to become developers—but we did want them to recognize patterns, spot strong candidates, and avoid red flags.

Highlights:

  • Differences between programming languages (Java ≠ JavaScript!)
  • Popular frameworks like React, Angular, Django, and Rails
  • How backend, frontend, and full-stack roles differ technically
  • SQL vs NoSQL: how databases power different types of products

Session 3: Expanding the Candidate Pool

One of the challenges recruiters face is filling roles with highly specific requirements. We explored ways to think out of the box and focused on how to expand a limited talent pool without sacrificing quality.

Highlights:

  • When a Java developer can transition from C#
  • Why Ruby or Python devs may thrive in similar backend roles
  • How to match frontend skills across frameworks (React ↔ Angular)
  • Industry-based recruiting strategies (Fintech, Crypto, Security)

Session 4: The Engineer of the Future – AI, ML & What’s Coming

In our final session, we looked ahead. As AI and machine learning redefine how software is built, the roles and skills that companies look for are evolving fast. We helped recruiters understand what’s real, what’s hype, and how to spot tomorrow’s talent today.

Highlights:

  • What machine learning engineers and data scientists actually do
  • LLMs, RAG, and other AI acronyms decoded
  • How AI is changing coding itself (think Copilot, ChatGPT)
  • The rise of “vibe coding” and how tooling is shifting the skillset

Focus on Practicality

Throughout the sessions, our approach was hands-on and context-driven. We used analogies, real-world examples, and visual aids that helped recruiters not just learn the terminology, but understand what it means in practice.

We emphasized:

  • How to read tech CVs more effectively
  • What to ask hiring managers to clarify role requirements
  • How to spot transferable skills even if titles don’t match

Final Takeaway

Tech recruiting is more than keyword matching. It’s about understanding the landscape well enough to connect the right people to the right teams, even when the match isn’t obvious initially. Our goal was to help recruiters feel confident navigating that complexity, and based on the energy and questions we saw, we think it worked.
